Dr. V, I think Mr. Me could be inferring you should upgrade to the
latest version of Xnews. The one you're running ( ) has been
superceded.

The latest is . Get it at the Xnews homepage:

You'll see a link in the top left hand corner of the page with the
version date and a hyperlink labelled 'TEST'. This is the latest
working version, not a beta. The file downloaded from this link
contains only the file without an installer. With Xnews
shut down just copy this new into your Xnews folder so it
replaces the existing (which you might like to backup
beforehand).

Now see if running the new version sorts out your problem.
