Well, you were all right, it's an issue of the line drawing characters
and Apple's settings.

Both, setting either simulate_graphic_chars to 1 or switching off the
setting "Wide glyphs for Japanese/Chines/etc." [1] worked
out well (screenshots 1-4 at http://www./slrn/).

But have a look at screenshots 5 and 6. Here I use both simulated
drawing characters and deselected wide glyphs in to no
avail. Header lines and even the article bodies look somehow screwn.
This might have to do with the font, and charset gb2312
or any given combination of those?

Anyway, I'm using simulated line drawing characters and wide glyphs
for the time being because I do like to get those rarely used wide
characters displayed properly in the newsgroups I read, and because
I cannot read Japanese and Chinese groups anyway.

I'd like to thank you all, and again, I really do appreciate your recent
revival of slrn's development and all developers great work for a great
newsreader ;-)
