As others have commented, that's a rather eccentric way to read and post
to newsgroups. I don't think sendmail can 'post' using the NNTP protocol,
although if you want to use a re-mailer to send your posts into the
oblivion such things are consigned to by most sensible usenetters I
suppose you could use sendmail for that.
If you're looking for a program that includes both email and usenet in a
single 'interface' then there are a number of those, eg Thunderbird,
Opera, Claws Mail, Mahogany, Pine (or Alpine), ...
Mutt is an email program that can (I've heard) be extended to function as
a usenet client too.
Emacs has both email and usenet tools.
There are programs such as Leafnode, sn, Noffle, etc, which can function
as a local news-server for you, with a news spool you can read from and
post to anyway you want. But a news spool is not a "maildir".
Email and usenet are quite different things. Even combined email and
usenet programs always treat the two things seperately. For the best
usenet experience a dedicated usenet client is strongly recommended.
Linux has several to choose from, as you might expect for an OS so closely
related to the one on which usenet was created on.
Slrn, Pine, and Gnus (emacs), are probably the best console-based usenet
clients (if that's what you mean by "a sendmail interface").
